Punctuating Dialogue Containing Other Punctuation Marks - By Heather Martin
00:00 | Hello Today we're going to take a look at punctuating
00:04 | dialogue so you never make a mistake again . Obviously
00:11 | , when you're punctuating dialogue , you need to use
00:14 | your quotation marks effectively . Let's take a little look
00:18 | at a conversation between Fred and Mary Fred . It's
00:24 | my turn . Give me the iPad , Mary Wind
00:29 | right now . No , I'm Fred paused , busy
00:36 | playing angry birds . Now , as you can see
00:40 | on Lee , the words spoken are surrounded by the
00:43 | quotation marks and nothing else . The little tags that
00:48 | say Who said what are not in the quotation marks
00:52 | ? They are separate , and they're separated off by
00:55 | commas as well . There's a common at the end
00:58 | here . And then there's a comma after what was
01:02 | said by Mary . But you'll notice that the comma
01:05 | here is inside the quotation mark , whereas the comma
01:08 | here that separates off Mary Wind is outside . What
01:13 | she says next , when she yells , Right now
01:16 | , it's the same thing down here with Fred ,
01:19 | you've got the common that separates off what Fred started
01:21 | to say before he paused , and then the little
01:24 | indicators , saying that Fred Paused , separated off with
01:27 | a comma , and then the quotation marks that go
01:30 | around . His exact words and his exact words were
01:33 | busy playing angry birds . You need to remember to
01:39 | keep the punctuation marks inside the quotation marks . So
01:43 | , in other words , if you're using specific punctuation
01:46 | like an exclamation point or a question mark to indicate
01:50 | the volume or the type of phrase that the person
01:56 | is saying , you need to keep those punctuation marks
01:59 | inside the quotation marks . Let's see if you can
02:02 | find the mist ake , so help me if you
02:06 | don't let me have a turn , I'll tell Mom
02:09 | , Mary screamed . Do you think she'll even care
02:14 | ? Fred taunted . Now you've got to , um
02:19 | , bits of dialogue here . One is written correctly
02:23 | , and one is not . Which one is correct
02:28 | ? That's right , it's Do you think she'll even
02:31 | care ? Because the question mark here is inside the
02:35 | quotation mark . Whereas when Mary screams the exclamation point
02:40 | , there is outside . The quotation mark , now
02:46 | on uninterrupted speech , needs quotation marks on Lee at
02:50 | the beginning and the end . We've just looked at
02:53 | examples of interrupted speech where the speeches interrupted by the
02:58 | tag that indicates who's saying what , but now we're
03:02 | going to look at two bits of bits of dialogue
03:06 | that have uninterrupted speech with the tags . At the
03:09 | end of what was said , you are such a
03:13 | greedy pig . Everyone says so . I'll bet you
03:17 | got it f and sharing When you were in preschool
03:20 | , Mary shouted . Oh , whatever . I have
03:24 | so many more friends than you dio . Everyone at
03:27 | school says You smell , Fred stated . Now which
03:31 | one of these is correct ? That's right . It's
03:38 | the You are such a greedy pig . The thing
03:40 | that Mary shouted , and you'll notice that this whole
03:43 | entire thing if it would get smaller again , this
03:46 | whole entire thing is in quotation marks , whereas here
03:50 | everything , Fred said . Every sentence is separated by
03:53 | quotation mark and at this point , and this is
03:56 | where you have to be careful when you're typing this
03:58 | quotation marks is backwards . It's backwards because there's a
04:02 | space between where the quotation mark is and the eye
04:07 | there's the writer had accidentally put a space there .
04:10 | Therefore , it made this quotation mark backwards . Your
04:13 | quotation marks should always snuggle up to what is being
04:16 | said Now . You also need to remember that you
04:23 | need to start a new paragraph each time the speaker
04:27 | changes . If you have a couple of people speaking
04:31 | to each other and you make them speak within one
04:34 | paragraph and you don't start a new one for each
04:37 | speaker . It's really confusing for the reader to figure
04:41 | out who is saying what . So when you write
04:44 | your dialogue , it should look something like this .
04:49 | You can be so cruel sometimes , Mary wailed .
04:54 | Oh , I suppose you'll go crying to Mom ,
04:58 | Fred Side , You said . People think I smell
05:03 | sobbed , Mary . That's so mean . It's pretty
05:06 | obvious here that we're switching speakers . As you can
05:10 | see , it's indented each time that a new speaker
05:13 | begins . So we have Mary than Fred than Mary
05:16 | , and it's very clear it's much clearer this way
05:20 | than it is if you had it all in one
05:23 | paragraph . Finally , when Onley , too . People
05:28 | are talking . You do not have to keep using
05:31 | their names . Sometimes it's really clear who is saying
05:35 | what and to keep saying , Fred said . Mary
05:39 | said , Fred yelled , Mary , wine just gets
05:42 | a bit repetitive , so let's just look at the
05:45 | rest of the conversation between Fred and Mary and see
05:48 | if you can figure out who is saying what .
05:51 | Despite the fact that it doesn't say who is saying
05:54 | what people don't really think you smell . They don't
06:02 | Of course not . And I don't think so either
06:07 | . Really . Off course . You're my sister .
06:12 | We probably smell exactly the same . So you'll let
06:16 | me have a turn now . No , I'm busy
06:20 | . Go away now . It's obvious here exactly who
06:25 | is saying what ? Since Fred started out telling Mary
06:28 | that she smelled here , he's trying to comfort her
06:31 | so you can see and hear . Mary is being
06:33 | comforted . So you know Fred , Mary , Fred
06:37 | , Mary . It's very clear in the writing who
06:40 | is saying what and since it's just two people ,
06:43 | you don't consistently have to say that . So that's
06:46 | it . Writing dialogue is easy . Simply keep the
06:50 | exact words that the person is saying , along with
06:54 | any punctuation , that that sentence that they're saying needs
06:57 | within the quotation marks change paragraphs when each speaker speaks
07:03 | . And sometimes you don't always have to say who
07:07 | is saying what because it's already clear that does it
07:11 | for me . Now go off and have some happy
07:14 | writing |
