What to Expect in 3rd Grade English Language Arts (ELA) - By Lumos Learning
00:07 | Hi , I'm Liz Garrison , and I'm a third
00:13 | grade reading language arts teacher , Epitope Elementary in Batavia
00:16 | , Ohio . Third grade language arts is different from
00:19 | second grade language arts and the fact that if you
00:21 | think of the standards , you think of them like
00:22 | kind of like a V , where kindergarten , we're
00:24 | building our foundation . And then every year we're building
00:27 | out . There's 10 literature standards , 10 informational tech
00:31 | standards and three writing standards , and those carry all
00:34 | the way through kindergarten to 12th grade . We just
00:36 | build on them every year . So what you're going
00:38 | to see is a lot of the second grade standards
00:40 | than just a little bit will be added to them
00:43 | . We're going to read the first part first ,
00:45 | and you and your partner are going to be looking
00:46 | at what is the main idea . And then how
00:49 | did the authors support ? That may not be as
00:52 | far as reading . You will see a lot more
00:54 | focus on evidence from the text before supporting details of
01:00 | the author gave to hold up like a table .
01:03 | Their main idea . It's a very hard thing to
01:06 | teach because the kids like to draw on their background
01:09 | knowledge and you see a lot more of a shift
01:12 | towards informational text . That's kind of the college and
01:15 | career readiness reading that informational text so you'll see a
01:18 | lot more of that . And people also see non
01:21 | literal language introduced in second grade , they learned about
01:25 | announce verbs , adjectives , adverbs . In third grade
01:28 | , we started to add what is a comparative adverb
01:31 | ? What's a superlative adverb ? And then we also
01:36 | in the grammar , we see kind of more complex
01:39 | rules , like in second grade , they see an
01:40 | apostrophe . We use that to make a contraction ,
01:43 | and then in third grade , we use an apostrophe
01:45 | to make a possessive in third grade . We're kind
01:48 | of getting towards the end of the foundational phonics skills
01:51 | . We're focusing on higher level decoding , like solidification
01:55 | or prefixes and suffixes . In third grade , you
01:59 | have to know what those prefixes and suffixes mean .
02:02 | And then how does that change the meaning of the
02:03 | word ? So , like if I say I'm repainting
02:06 | , my house re means again , and then bang
02:09 | means in the present tense . So they had to
02:11 | really apply those prefix and suffix meanings to the word
02:16 | and understand them . We're meeting in writing you'll once
02:19 | again see those three main standards narrative , informational and
02:23 | opinion writing . So we're taking a building , but
02:26 | getting a little more complex in second grade . For
02:29 | instance , an opinion running . They have to say
02:31 | , this is my opinion . And this is why
02:34 | in third grade you have to start to make a
02:36 | more structured as so we have our opening . In
02:39 | our opinion , are reasons we're gonna list are reasons
02:42 | I think this because you're gonna list out your reasons
02:46 | and then you're going to give evidence for each one
02:48 | of those reasons in speaking and listening , all those
02:52 | standards have to do with coming prepared to a discussion
02:55 | in third grade . You have to then take that
02:57 | discussion and then kind of make it your own voice
02:59 | . So you have to say , Okay , I
03:01 | heard this and I heard this and someone gave a
03:04 | talk about this . And now here's what I think
03:06 | , having taken in all that information . So one
03:08 | of the things parents might notices students transitioning into finding
03:12 | their own voice and having their own opinion about stories
03:16 | . In second grade they look at the point of
03:19 | view of the narrator , but then in third grade
03:21 | . We focus on what is your point of view
03:23 | ? And is it different from that of the narrator
03:25 | way parents can help at home ? And what I
03:27 | always tell everyone is just to always read with your
03:30 | child and not only just read with your child ,
03:33 | but to discuss it . What did you like about
03:35 | this story and who's your favorite character and why are
03:38 | they your favorite character ? Sometimes we don't always read
03:41 | as much nonfiction at home kids to read the newspaper
03:44 | that can read National Geographic kids Ranger Rick , Whatever
03:49 | . Just getting them reading and reading informational text and
03:52 | getting them talking about whatever their passion is whatever they're
03:55 | interested in , have them read about it and then
03:57 | have them talk about it because that really engages them
04:00 | in the story . And then that translates into their
04:03 | writing at school . I really like third grade language
04:06 | arts because you can really dig into a story and
04:08 | talk about the different elements of the story , and
04:11 | you look at character and setting and plot and theme
04:14 | , so you're kind of moving into higher level thinking |
