eSpark Learning: Using Textual Evidence Instructional Video (4.RI.8) - By eSparkLearningVideos
00:09 | Hello , readers . It's Miss Bushman . Today we're
00:12 | going to work on a nonfiction reading strategy . When
00:16 | reading nonfiction , the author always gives reasons or support
00:21 | to a topic . Watch today as we find what
00:25 | the author gives as reasons or support . Mhm .
00:29 | If I had a topic that I was writing about
00:31 | , I would use evidence or support to tell more
00:34 | . My evidence or support would back up my idea
00:37 | . For example , if I get the topic ,
00:40 | winter is a great season . I would need support
00:42 | to tell why winter is a great season . Can
00:45 | you come up with any reasons ? Let's look at
00:48 | the support that I came up with . I think
00:53 | winter is great because there are many winter holidays .
00:56 | It also snows allowed in winter , and some awesome
01:00 | sports are played on Lee in the wintertime , thes
01:03 | pieces of support or evidence make my claim or idea
01:07 | more believable . Let's see how this looks when reading
01:12 | nonfiction . I'm going to use the book whales and
01:15 | dolphins to help me try this reading strategy . I
01:20 | see that these pages air all about how whales and
01:22 | dolphins are mammals , not fish . I can see
01:25 | that because of the heading When looking at this page
01:28 | , I can observe that the author gives reasons or
01:30 | support as to why they are mammals . Let's dig
01:33 | deeper to find reasons why they are mammals First ,
01:40 | it says that some water animals are mammals just like
01:44 | us . They have lungs , not gills , and
01:47 | must come to the surface to breathe air . This
01:50 | gives me several reasons why these animals are mammals .
01:53 | I know that mammals breathe air and they are warm
01:56 | blooded . Let's look at the next page to find
02:01 | even more support here . It says that sea lions
02:05 | need their mother's milk . This is another piece of
02:09 | support as to why animals that live in the ocean
02:12 | are mammals . Last but not least , it also
02:18 | says that whales , dolphins and seals live in icy
02:22 | places under the skin . A thick , oily fat
02:26 | called blubber protects them from the cold . Fat is
02:30 | another characteristic of a mammal , and it explains further
02:34 | why these animals are mammals . As you can see
02:40 | , the author gave many pieces of evidence or support
02:43 | to tell about ocean mammals . I can take all
02:46 | those pieces of information and add them to my graphic
02:48 | organizer . This is showing you how an author used
02:52 | a support to tell about a particular topic . Take
02:55 | a moment to read through the support in this graphic
02:58 | organizer . We're now going to practice finding support from
03:20 | this page . In our nonfiction book , I can
03:22 | see that the hunting is communication . This means that
03:25 | this section will be about how ocean mammals communicate .
03:31 | Let's zoom in closer to find text clues about communication
03:35 | . Read the paragraph that is highlighted in yellow to
03:38 | see if you confined text clues about how or why
03:41 | ocean animals communicate . Did you read something about whale
03:53 | communication ? I read that pods of whales talk to
03:57 | each other by clicking and whistling . I added this
04:00 | to our graphic organizer to show our support about animal
04:04 | communications in the ocean . Let's do the same thing
04:09 | for the section titled I'm Here . Read this paragraph
04:13 | to find another piece of text evidence or support readers
04:31 | . Were you able to find information about how ocean
04:33 | mammals use their flippers ? I saw that animals with
04:37 | flippers slap it against the water to get others attention
04:41 | . This is telling me more about how ocean mammals
04:44 | communicate . Let's find one last text clue . Read
04:50 | this section titled Bubble soup readers . I'm sure that
05:08 | you just read about one way that humpback whales communicate
05:12 | male humpback whales make bubbles and sing to find a
05:15 | mate . I added this as our last piece of
05:18 | support for how ocean mammals communicate readers . You did
05:23 | such a nice job finding text support . Take a
05:27 | moment to re read our topic and our three pieces
05:31 | of support readers . I hope you now understand that
05:49 | when reading nonfiction the author will give evidence or support
05:53 | to particular topics . As you read nonfiction pay attention
05:57 | to how the author gives evidence . |
