The FSA is a Computer-Based Longitudinal Assessment System for College and Career Readiness. The students will face a variety of new technology-enhanced questions as a part of the computer-based tests.
Some of them are Multiple choice-single correct responses, Multiple choice-multiple correct responses, Matching Tables, Drag and Drop, Hot text, Table Fill in, Graphing, Equation/numeric, Extended constructed response, Short answer, and many more.
Today, we will share several sample questions along with practice test links for grade 8 Math that gives you an idea of questions that your students are likely to see on the test. After each sample question, an explanation follows that includes any important aspects of the task that you may need to consider with respect to the skills, processes, and information your students need to know.
Domain: Grade 8 >> The Number System
Sample Question: The number 57 belongs to which of the following set(s) of numbers?
- N only
- N, W, and Z only
- N, W, Z, and Q only
- All of the following: N, W, Z, Q, and R
Answer Explanation: The number 57 meets the requirements of each of the following sets of numbers: N (natural numbers), W (whole numbers), Z (integers), Q (rational numbers), and R (real numbers).

Domain: Grade 8 >> Expressions & Equations
Sample Question: s -52 equal to (-5)2 ?
- Yes, because they both equal -25.
- Yes, because they both equal -10.
- Yes, because they both equal 25.
- No, because -52 equals -25 and (-5)2 equals 25.
Answer Explanation: Unless there are parentheses to denote otherwise, the exponent is only applied to the constant or variable immediately preceding it. If there are parentheses immediately preceding it, then it is applied to everything within the parentheses.

Domain: Grade 8 >> Functions
Sample Question: Write the function represented by the following pairs of points:
[ (0,3), (1,2), (2,1), (3,0) ]
- y = 3x + 3
- y = x + 3
- y = -x + 3
- y = -3x + 3
Answer Explanation: Because the point (0,3) is on the line, the y-intercept , b in the equation y=mx+b, is 3.
m = (3-2)/(0-1)= 1/-1 = -1
Therefore, the equation is y = -1x +3 = -x + 3

Domain: Grade 8 >> Geometry
Sample Question: The point (9, 3) is rotated clockwise through 270°. Which of the following ordered pairs represents the new point?
- (-3, 9)
- (9, 3)
- (3, -9)
- (-9, -3)
Answer Explanation: Rotation through 270o clockwise can be thought of as a result of two successive transformations (1) rotation through 180o clockwise and (2) rotation through 90o clockwise. After 1st transformation, (x, y) becomes (-x, -y). After 2nd transformation (-x, -y) becomes (-y, x).
(x, y) becomes (-y, x) when rotating 270° clockwise.

Domain: Grade 8 >> Statistics & Probability
Sample Question: A group of students was surveyed to find out their preferred type of beverage. The results of the survey are shown below.
Of the total students surveyed, what fraction had no beverage preference?
- 17/120
- 3/20
- 17/160
- 9/80
Answer Explanation: See Table.
The total number surveyed was 160. Of those 160 students, 17 had no preference.
