Sample Question: These exercises will help you see how the parts of a paragraph contribute to the whole.
Choose the best possible supporting detail for each argument.
1. The beach is a perfect place to take a vacation.
2. I love to laze around on the sands.
3. ___________________
That is why I love to take a vacation at the beach.
- I love the smell of sea water.
- I hate the smell of sea water.
- Starfish are so cool.
- I like to see aircraft fly.
Answer Explanation: The correct answer is A. Loving the smell of sea water supports loving the beach as far as a vacation trip. Although there are starfish in the ocean and sometimes aircraft fly by, neither of those details support the main idea of the paragraph. The author would not like vacationing at the beach if he/she hated the smell of sea water, so B is not correct.

Sample Question: Michael Jordan was the greatest basketball player of all time. When he played for the Chicago Bulls, they had one winning season after another. He scored more than 100 points in 1,108 games, won two Olympic gold medals, and was ranked #1 by ESPN Magazine. Chosen for the NBA All-Stars 14 times, Jordan was ten times the scoring champ, five times the Most Valuable Player, and six times the scoring champ of the NBA. When he began losing his hair, he shaved his head completely and started a fashion trend for other players. He was chosen to make an animated movie called “Space Jam” with Bugs Bunny. No other player has come close to those achievements.
Which of the following is NOT a reason why Michael Jordan is considered the greatest basketball player of all time, according to the passage?
- Michael Jordan shaved his head.
- Michael Jordan won two gold medals in the Olympics.
- Michael Jordan scored more than 100 points in 1,108 games.
- Michael Jordan was the Most Valuable Player five times.
Answer Explanation: While it is true that Michael Jordan did shave his head, it does not support the idea that he is the greatest basketball player of all time; whereas all the other statements do support this idea. The correct answer is A.

Once upon a time there was a little girl named Lacy. (1)_______________ she was a very sweet little girl, she always got into trouble. Her mother would give her warning after warning every day. (2)_______________, Lacy just didn’t listen.

What is the best transition word for blank #2?
- However
- In addition
- Although
- In conclusion
Answer Explanation: Answer choice B does not work because “in addition” is adding information. Answer choice C is an opposite word (which is what is needed), but “although” does not work in this sentence. Answer choice D is not correct because “in conclusion” does not make sense when it’s not the last sentence of a paragraph. Answer choice A is correct because it is an opposite word that makes sense in the sentence.
