A suffix is a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word or root (i.e., a base form), serving to form a new word.


Let’s look at some of the most commonly used suffixes and the meaning they impart…


(1) -able – gives the meaning is /can be

Some able words are Comfortable, Learnable, Walkable,Perishable …

(2) -ar, -er, -or – gives the meaning One who

Some ar, er, or words are Beggar, liar, Doctor, Actor….

(3) -en -gives the meaning To

Some en words are Strengthen, Fasten, Lengthen, Weaken…

(4) -er – gives the meaning more

Some er words are Smarter, Closer, Lighter, Quicker ..

(5) -ish – gives the meaning relating to

Some ish words are Childish, Bookish, Selfish..

(6) -ful – gives the meaning full of

Some ful words are Joyful, Cheerful, Colourful, Careful….

(7) -less – gives the meaning without

Some less words are Tireless, Joyless, Tireless, Ageless….

(8) -like – gives the meaning resembling

Some mis words are Lifelike, Childlike, Homelike….

(9) -ship – gives the meaning State or quality of

Some ship words are Friendship, Hardship, Citizenship, Internship…

(10) -ly -gives the meaning resembling

Some mid words are Fatherly, Motherly, Scholarly, Sisterly…
