OST SAMPLE QUESTIONS: GRADE 6 MATH

Ohio’s State Tests (OST) is a Computer-Based Assessment that includes a variety of new technology-enhanced questions.

Sample Question: Karen bought a total of seven items at five different stores. She began with $65.00 and had $15.00 remaining. Which of the following equation can be used to determine the average cost per item?

1. 5x =$65.00-$15.00
2. 7x+ $15.00=$65.00
3. 7x =$75.00
4. 7x × 5=$50.00

Answer Explanation: The cost of the seven items plus $15.00 should equal $65.00. If the average cost per item is x, then 7x is the cost of all seven items. Therefore 7x + $15.00 = $65.00 can be used to find x.
Answer B would be correct if it read 7x = $50.00.
Answer D would be correct if it read 7x = $65.00 – $15.00.

Sample Question: Brian is mowing his lawn. He and his family have 7.84 acres. Brian mows 1.29 acres on Monday, 0.85 acres on Tuesday, and 3.63 acres on Thursday. How many acres does Brian have left to mow?

4. 0.207

Answer Explanation: 1.29 + 0.85 + 3.63= 5.77

7.84- 5.77 = 2.07 acres left to mow

Sample Question: Which inequality has the same solution set as 3(q + 6) > 11?

1. 3q + 18 < 11
2. 3q + 18 > 11
3. 3q + 6 > 11
4. q + 18 > 11

Answer Explanation: The Distributive Property states that a number outside of the parentheses should be distributed to all numbers inside the parentheses. The inequality symbol should not change.

Sample Question: Identify the point on the grid below that corresponds to the ordered pair of x = 2y + 3, when y = 2.

1. Point M
2. Point N
3. Point R
4. Point Q

Answer Explanation: x = 2y + 3, when y = 2

Substitute 2 for y.

x = 2(2) + 3

x = 4 + 3

x = 7

This makes the ordered pair (7,2), which corresponds to point R.

Answer Explanation: A circle graph is the best graph to use when representing percentages. The circle graph would show what percentage of a family’s entire day is spent doing each activity.
