00:09 we've talked a lot about water , you know a
00:12 lot about water and that's a good thing because without
00:15 it , none of us would be here . Earth
00:17 has a certain amount of water that's been circling the
00:19 globe for millions of years . Remember that you're drinking
00:23 the exact same water that the dinosaurs used to drink
00:26 . You also know that the vast majority of the
00:28 world's water is in the ocean . That's great for
00:31 whales and clown fish and octopus is , but it's
00:34 too salty for us to drink . So instead we
00:37 let nature do the work through the process of evaporation
00:40 , condensation and precipitation . Does this sound familiar ?
00:43 The water cycle evaporation takes water from the surface of
00:47 the ocean and turns it into water vapor , leaving
00:49 the salt behind . The water comes back down to
00:52 earth in the form of precipitation , rain , sleet
00:55 and snow . This fresh water is all the water
00:57 we'll ever have . It's a limited resource in a
01:00 closed system Now . We've also talked about how people
01:03 sometimes change the level of fresh water they have access
01:06 to buy polluting , damning and over using water .
01:10 And we saw what happens to animals , like the
01:11 vaquita and freshwater fish in the Elbe River in Washington
01:15 state when we mess up the water supply . But
01:17 what happens to people when there's less fresh water ?
01:24 The short answer is when access to water goes away
01:28 , it can get pretty scary . Of course we
01:31 need water to drink . That's a biggie . But
01:33 we also need water to grow crops , keep toilets
01:35 running and make things and we use water for a
01:38 bunch of other stuff like washing our cars and keeping
01:41 our lawns green . So to see how people are
01:44 affected when there's less fresh water available , Let's take
01:47 a look at some places that don't have quite enough
01:50 . And then our investigation starts in sunny California ,
01:56 maybe to sunny California as of today , California is
02:00 in the middle of a drought . A big one
02:02 . It's not raining as much or as often as
02:05 it needs to . On top of that . Southern
02:06 California is at the end of the Colorado River for
02:09 millions of years . This river flowed from the Colorado
02:12 mountains all the way to the sea where California meets
02:14 Mexico . But today the river often dries up before
02:18 it reaches the ocean . So less water gets to
02:20 California than before . So what goes on when California
02:23 doesn't have enough water ? Well , you know what
02:25 can happen when there's one really cool toy in a
02:27 room full of kids . The kids fight in ,
02:30 California produces nearly half of the fruits , nuts and
02:33 vegetables grown in the United States . So how much
02:36 water that California has access to has big effects on
02:39 lots of people . As a result , water scarcity
02:42 is creating conflict . Do I get to flush my
02:45 toilet or do you farmer joe in California get to
02:48 water your crops to work out disputes like this ?
02:50 The fight for water is taking place mostly in courtrooms
02:54 . For example , some people in California are pushing
02:56 for new laws to regulate who gets how much water
02:58 and many other states are experiencing drought too . So
03:01 the conflict isn't just confined to California among all the
03:04 states along the Colorado River arguments are breaking out about
03:07 who gets how much water from the river . And
03:09 these arguments are raising big questions . Like do we
03:12 keep sending water to cities in the desert , far
03:15 away from the river , even though those cities close
03:17 to the river are low on water to and do
03:19 we like farmers use the water so that they can
03:21 keep working and growing food ? Or do we send
03:24 it to homes so that people can take showers and
03:26 cook dinner ? These are tough questions , and the
03:34 fact is the problems in California aren't new . Water
03:37 has been a major source of conflict among people in
03:39 different parts of the world for thousands of years .
03:42 Next time we'll take a look at different ways people
03:45 are responding to the scarcity of fresh water and maybe
03:48 it'll spark ideas from you to help find a solution
03:51 to our water problems .
