00:0-1 | what if I told you that this opportunity we have
00:03 | with our kids at home , you can actually use
00:07 | it to help them learn Math with fun and pleasure
00:11 | and gets to see that math is all around them
00:16 | . Hi this is dr Pan Performance coach at Dartmouth
00:19 | as you can see . I don't have my normal
00:21 | equipments this week . But back to what I was
00:25 | saying , normally we don't have this kind of opportunity
00:28 | to spend this length of time at home with our
00:32 | kids , but with current circumstances it's literally has followed
00:39 | right into your lap . It's actually gold if you
00:41 | if you change the way you look at it ,
00:43 | I know we'll have a lot of stuff on our
00:45 | plates but every day if you think about it it's
00:48 | really an opportunity for your Children to experience experience math
00:53 | or around them in the kitchen , in the bedroom
00:56 | , it's just around you and this helps them to
01:00 | avoid falling behind and set them up to get ahead
01:04 | , which is we all parents we really want .
01:08 | Right ? So let me give you a few examples
01:11 | wear and how to find the math in your real
01:15 | life . This week . Let's start with games ,
01:18 | Games are a good place to uh , keep the
01:21 | kids occupied . And anyhow , Candy land a picture
01:27 | of Candy land . Uh , Cars has a lot
01:30 | of math in it . Numbers for sure . Right
01:33 | . Chess is always a good place . It has
01:36 | uh , 64 scripts , grids on the chessboard for
01:41 | kids who are just learning multiplication young kids that really
01:45 | , really fantastic place to start . Eight times eight
01:49 | is a square four by 4 , 16 . You
01:51 | can see it all on the chessboard . Uh ,
01:54 | yeah . See uh , this one has a lot
01:57 | of thoughts . It has a lot of counting games
02:00 | for younger kids as well . And do you play
02:03 | a monopoly great math games ? Because there's money ,
02:08 | there's dies , There's correct change , right ? You
02:10 | have to add and subtract for that . And at
02:13 | first your kids might have to count all the dots
02:16 | at the beginning . But every time they do that
02:20 | , they after a while they'll just know it .
02:22 | That's math right there . Okay . Now , if
02:25 | you think about it , pretty much all the board
02:27 | games you have in your living room require some somewhat
02:32 | asia probably map to use that to your advantage .
02:35 | Next stop kitchen . The kitchen is really a perfect
02:39 | place . The incorporate math . There's measuring counting fractions
02:44 | with measuring cups , cutting pies and cakes or whatever
02:49 | you're baking . Whatever . Use the kitchen to occupy
02:52 | them . There's a units with temperature , there's a
02:55 | fire and highness Celsius . For older kids , they
02:58 | can even get on the Youtube and look why we
03:00 | have two types of different units and how to come
03:03 | work back and forth . That's math right there .
03:06 | Um , let's talk about baking , for example ,
03:09 | requires measuring liquid solids and often counting eggs for younger
03:15 | kids . Not to mention setting the temperature . As
03:18 | I mentioned earlier , I remember when our kids were
03:21 | little , we picked an old table scale and just
03:26 | left them in the kitchen to play and wait things
03:29 | . They had a blossom that so it's occupy them
03:33 | and they're learning math . All right . What about
03:36 | for middle schoolers ? The bad . One of the
03:39 | best things at home . If you start at home
03:41 | as most , just about everyone is tape measure is
03:45 | magical . Have them measure lots of different things around
03:50 | the house . Maybe write down the size of the
03:53 | room . How big is the carpet square footage or
03:57 | finding height off the person in each member , family
04:03 | member . Did you know that we actually our step
04:07 | taller in the morning ? I didn't know that until
04:09 | my kids actually did this one when they were little
04:13 | uh size of the room for the more advanced case
04:16 | . Maybe they can actually measure the volume of the
04:19 | room there in size of the bed . The difference
04:23 | between king beds and queen beds for example . Right
04:27 | . There's a lot of things you can do with
04:29 | a measuring tape for middle schoolers . Now you get
04:32 | the idea roughly Now for younger kids , the bright
04:35 | mm candies are fantastic . Or marbles if you don't
04:39 | want to give them a candy or the worried about
04:42 | the sugar overdose overdose . But sugar high . Okay
04:47 | , so with candies you can teach them younger kids
04:49 | adding subtracting . Um Also did you know that subtracting
04:53 | by the way is a tougher transition for younger kids
04:56 | . It's actually tougher transition from adding to subtracting than
05:00 | some of the higher math transition . So that's a
05:04 | fantastic way to teach them and use the time you
05:07 | have at hand . So you can see there's so
05:11 | many opportunities to do far math and around the house
05:15 | . I know it's not the optimal circumstances , but
05:19 | let me leave you with some pointers as you spent
05:22 | time this week with you kids . Four pointers ,
05:27 | number one , make it a fun . Now remember
05:29 | this is not homework time for them . Kids are
05:32 | stressed . So are you ? So make it a
05:34 | fun , find a way to engage them , pointer
05:38 | number to look for their interest , guide them kind
05:42 | of guide water instead of blocking them or force water
05:47 | to go somewhere . Guide them 123 don't push too
05:51 | hard . Um as they are , kids are kids
05:57 | right end of the day . You want to make
05:59 | this learning fun for them . And the last point
06:02 | is you invite them to share and teach you because
06:05 | they like it . They will felt empowered . So
06:10 | the taken forward point is don't waste the school an
06:13 | opportunity if you can and use it to show your
06:17 | kids another side of learning math where it's fun and
06:21 | it's all around them . So our thoughts with you
06:24 | and I hope everyone stay healthy . We'll get through
06:27 | this together until next time , happy parenting . |
