00:16 | some really cool things with you . All right ?
00:20 | You are going to learn things you'll want to share
00:23 | with others and they'll be like , wow , how
00:25 | do you know so much about thanksgiving ? So if
00:31 | you're ready , let's take a serious look at this
00:33 | awesome holiday . It's a fun Durkee . Okay ,
00:41 | so what is thanksgiving ? That's a great place to
00:44 | start . What is thanksgiving ? Yeah . Well thanksgiving
00:51 | is a special holiday that is celebrated in the United
00:54 | States Canada Liberia and in some of the Caribbean islands
01:02 | . Let's look at these places on the world map
01:05 | . Canada is right here and south of Canada ,
01:08 | the United States of America . Then over here the
01:13 | Caribbean islands and then in West Africa , the country
01:17 | of Liberia . All of these places celebrate thanksgiving .
01:24 | Mhm . What's interesting is these places don't celebrate thanksgiving
01:29 | on the same day . Yeah . Yeah For example
01:34 | , Thanksgiving is celebrated in Canada on the second Monday
01:38 | in October it's true in Liberia , Thanksgiving is celebrated
01:43 | the first Thursday in November and in the United States
01:47 | Thanksgiving is celebrated on the 4th Thursday in November .
01:56 | Here's the thing . While traditions can vary all thanksgiving
02:00 | celebrations have certain things in common regardless of where they
02:05 | happen in the world , there are certain things that
02:08 | make a thanksgiving celebration while thanksgiving celebration for example ,
02:17 | thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for all of
02:20 | the blessings from the past year . Without that it's
02:24 | not a thanksgiving celebration . No matter where it's celebrated
02:28 | in the world , thanksgiving is a time to be
02:31 | thankful and we have so much to be thankful for
02:36 | regardless of where it's celebrated . Thanksgiving is also a
02:40 | time for family and loved ones and friends and those
02:44 | that we care about , which makes sense because thanksgiving
02:47 | is all about being thankful for the blessings of the
02:50 | past year and you want to celebrate and be thankful
02:54 | with those who mean the most to you . Mhm
02:59 | . And of course food , you know , you
03:01 | can't celebrate thanksgiving without a wonderful feast and you don't
03:04 | eat this . Okay , what do you eat on
03:06 | thanksgiving ? Yeah . In Canada . And in the
03:12 | United States you typically have a turkey for thanksgiving .
03:16 | A turkey dinner is the tradition for most people who
03:20 | celebrate thanksgiving in the United States and Canada . That
03:24 | isn't the case everywhere though in Liberia for example ,
03:28 | instead of eating turkey for thanksgiving chicken is the center
03:32 | of their thanksgiving feast . Yeah , this adds up
03:39 | to a lot of food . Take the United States
03:41 | for example . Yeah . Yeah , believe it or
03:45 | not , 46 million turkeys are eaten on thanksgiving every
03:50 | year . In the United States , wow ! 46
03:54 | million turkeys and check this out , about 50 million
04:02 | pumpkin pies are eaten every year for thanksgiving . In
04:06 | the United States , about 50 million pumpkin pies ,
04:12 | wow , mm . Of course there is cranberry sauce
04:17 | and stuffing and sweet potatoes and the casseroles . There
04:21 | are so many delicious foods we eat on thanksgiving .
04:25 | Hey , what is your favorite part of the thanksgiving
04:29 | meal comment below ? We would love to hear what
04:32 | you enjoy eating most on thanksgiving . That was fun
04:40 | . But where did this all begin ? Yeah ,
04:45 | Well , interestingly enough in England , during the days
04:49 | of King Henry the Eighth , it was common for
04:51 | the people to have days of giving thanks . In
04:55 | fact they would call them days of thanksgiving . Yeah
05:02 | . Then there was this guy named martin frobisher .
05:06 | He was an english explorer who explored Canada . Just
05:12 | 31 years after King Henry the Eighth rain . In
05:17 | 15 78 martin frobisher held a day of thanksgiving in
05:22 | Canada . They were celebrating their arrival in Newfoundland .
05:26 | You can see him pictured here , Martin frobisher was
05:30 | from Britain and would have been familiar with the days
05:33 | of giving thanks . That happened during King Henry the
05:37 | Eighths Ring . They were grateful that they arrived in
05:40 | Newfoundland safely and enjoyed a beef dinner with a side
05:45 | of peace . Mm Tasty . Another group familiar with
05:52 | these days of thanksgiving were the pilgrims , a group
05:55 | of english settlers that came to America for religious freedom
06:00 | . They had different religious beliefs than many people in
06:04 | England and didn't want to be a part of the
06:06 | state church of England . Yeah , in a ship
06:12 | called the Mayflower , the pilgrims made their way across
06:15 | the atlantic ocean and arrived in present day massachusetts in
06:20 | a place called Plymouth . This colony became known as
06:25 | the Plymouth colony . Here's the thing , life was
06:31 | difficult at Plymouth and it wasn't until a native american
06:35 | named squanto helped them that they finally had their first
06:39 | successful harvest , their first successful harvest . So in
06:47 | celebration of this first successful harvest in 1621 , the
06:52 | pilgrims invited the Wampanoag people , including squanto and their
06:57 | leader named Massasoit , to celebrate a day of thanksgiving
07:02 | . The celebration lasted three days . We know they
07:06 | did a lot of eating , but what did they
07:09 | eat ? Well , the governor of the Plymouth colony
07:12 | named William Bradford , wrote that they ate birds and
07:16 | deer during the feast , and we know from his
07:19 | writings that they hunted for turkey . Could turkey have
07:22 | been one of those birds they ate during the thanksgiving
07:25 | feast ? There's a big chance , but to be
07:27 | honest , we don't know for sure What is interesting
07:34 | about the Thanksgiving celebration in 1621 is that it brought
07:39 | together the traditions of the days of giving thanks during
07:42 | the years of King Henry VIII and harvest festivals which
07:46 | were festivals celebrating a successful harvest . The two traditions
07:51 | were combined that day . You see long before the
07:57 | pilgrims or martin frobisher or King Henry the eighth native
08:01 | americans celebrated harvests . They would come together with loved
08:05 | ones , enjoy good food in gratitude and thankfulness for
08:09 | all of the wonderful things that were going on .
08:16 | Thanksgiving is special because we all need to be thankful
08:20 | , celebrating with family and friends with good food and
08:24 | thankful Hearts is an incredible tradition , wow ! Thanksgiving
