00:0-1 | Can you guess what this video is about ? Yeah
00:02 | , we got to give it away , didn't we
00:04 | ? That's right . We are learning about rocks in
00:06 | this video . Rocks are all around us . You
00:11 | see rocks all the time And some rocks are huge
00:15 | . Like the rocks that make up this massive rock
00:18 | formation . They're huge . But then sometimes rocks can
00:22 | be really tiny , wee wee tiny little baby rocks
00:27 | , Rocks are amazing and they're all around us .
00:31 | All right . So what are rocks ? Well rocks
00:35 | are solid chunks of one or more minerals . Rocks
00:40 | are mineral chunks . There are solid chunks of one
00:44 | or more minerals . Now most rocks are mixtures of
00:50 | multiple minerals . Like these rocks other rocks are made
00:57 | up of just one mineral . Like in this picture
01:00 | this is a picture of chalk , chalk is a
01:04 | type of rock made of a mineral called calcite .
01:09 | The next time you play with chalk just think wow
01:13 | this is made of calcite . These are like sticks
01:16 | of calcite shock is a rock that's made of calcite
01:23 | . So rocks are solid chunks of one or more
01:27 | minerals and they are super fun to learn about .
01:30 | That's why geologists are so cool , geologists are rock
01:35 | experts . They study rocks as their job . Mhm
01:40 | geologists disagree about how many different types of rocks there
01:44 | are but we can all agree on this . There
01:47 | are so many different types of rocks . To make
01:50 | things more . Simple rocks are put into three categories
01:53 | three major types of rock , sedimentary igneous and metamorphic
02:01 | . Can you say those with us sedimentary igneous ?
02:06 | Uh huh . And metamorphic . Yeah now this is
02:12 | pretty interesting . The category that Iraq belongs to tells
02:16 | us how that rock was made here . We'll show
02:21 | you with our first category of rocks sedimentary rocks .
02:27 | Mhm . All right . So what are sedimentary rocks
02:31 | ? Sedimentary rocks are rocks that are made up of
02:34 | little particles . They're made up of little particles .
02:38 | The particles are called sediment . Can you say that
02:43 | with us ? Sediment ? Yeah sediment an example of
02:47 | sediment is sand . Yeah sand is a type of
02:51 | sediment . It's kind of cool . Sea shells are
02:55 | an example of sediment as well . So there are
02:59 | lots of different types of sediment . But they're particles
03:02 | that could come from non living things like sand or
03:05 | they could come from living things like sea shells .
03:08 | That's fun . Sedimentary rocks are made up of little
03:12 | particles called sediments and you can even tell that from
03:17 | the name . Sedimentary sediment is in the name .
03:22 | So if you forget just look at the name ,
03:25 | sedimentary sediment is in the name . So the way
03:31 | sedimentary rocks are formed is by sediments collecting at the
03:35 | bottom of bodies of water like lakes and oceans .
03:39 | The sediment is pushed down by the water and over
03:42 | time the sediment starts to harden into rock . Water
03:47 | is what really makes sedimentary rocks without the water ,
03:51 | the sediments would never harden to become sedimentary rocks .
03:56 | They need water . Just think in that water .
04:01 | Right now sediments are getting pressed down and are hardening
04:05 | to become rock . The molecules in the water helped
04:09 | the sediment stick together . Kind of like cement .
04:13 | That is how sedimentary rocks are made . Okay we
04:18 | have two categories left . Let's learn about metamorphic rocks
04:24 | . Next metamorphic rocks are made when a rock goes
04:29 | through a lot of heat or pressure . Remember sedimentary
04:36 | rocks need water to be formed . They need water
04:39 | . Metamorphic rocks are different metamorphic rocks are rocks that
04:44 | need heat or pressure to be formed . Here's a
04:49 | simple way to remember that the word metamorphic has another
04:53 | word inside of it . The word morph . That's
04:56 | interesting . The word morph means to be changed .
05:00 | So when you think of rocks that are changed by
05:04 | heat or pressure think metamorphic metamorphic rocks morph they are
05:11 | changed by heat or pressure . Metamorphic rocks are formed
05:19 | below the earth's surface . That's cool . And here's
05:24 | the thing . Okay they make up a lot of
05:27 | the earth's crust which is the outer shell of the
05:31 | earth . Much of the earth's crust is made of
05:33 | metamorphic rocks . So we're not talking about this type
05:38 | of crust . We're talking about the earth's crust .
05:41 | Okay you can see that the earth's crossed the outer
05:46 | shell of the earth is broken up into these things
05:48 | that almost look like puzzle pieces . Scientists call these
05:53 | plates . Here is a map of these plates .
05:57 | Okay . And they have a really cool name .
05:59 | Scientists call them tectonic plates . Can you say that
06:03 | with us ? That's so cool . Tectonic plates ,
06:07 | These huge plates move and push against each other and
06:11 | there is a lot of heat and pressure there .
06:15 | Oh that's why there are so many metamorphic rocks that
06:20 | form in and around the earth's crust while mystery solved
06:26 | . And this is cool . The heat and pressure
06:28 | not only change what the rock looks like on the
06:30 | outside , they change what the minerals themselves are like
06:34 | . So the rock actually changes form . That means
06:39 | the heat or pressure morph the old rock into a
06:43 | new rock . A metamorphic rock . Now sometimes sedimentary
06:50 | rocks get pushed into the earth and our around pressure
06:54 | or heat . Then the sedimentary rock turns into a
06:58 | metamorphic rock . It morphs or changes into a different
07:02 | rock . It has become metamorphic . So heat or
07:08 | pressure create metamorphic rocks and they usually form deep under
07:13 | the surface of the earth in and around the earth's
07:16 | crust . All right now we've come to our final
07:21 | rock category . Igneous Mhm . This is really interesting
07:27 | . Igneous rocks are formed when molten rock cools and
07:32 | hardens . You might be wondering , what does molten
07:36 | rock mean ? What is molten rock ? Well this
07:40 | is molten rock , molten rock is liquid rock and
07:44 | there's two forms of it inside of the earth .
07:47 | Molten rock is called magma . That's right magma .
07:53 | But when it comes out from inside the earth it
07:57 | is called lava , lava is molten rock . To
08:01 | lava is molten rock that is no longer inside of
08:05 | the earth . So Igneous rocks are formed when molten
08:10 | rock cools and that molten rock can be magma or
08:14 | lava . Do you remember how metamorphic rocks are formed
08:19 | from pressure or heat ? Well , Igneous rocks are
08:22 | kind of the opposite aren't they ? Igneous rocks are
08:25 | formed from molten rock cooling . Isn't that interesting metamorphic
08:30 | rocks are formed from pressure or heat . And the
08:34 | igneous rocks are formed during this cooling of molten rock
08:40 | . Mhm . Sometimes metamorphic rocks are heated so much
08:46 | they turn into molten rock . When this molten rock
08:50 | cools , it becomes an igneous rock . That's pretty
08:54 | cool . A common place for igneous rocks to form
08:58 | is a volcano . The lava that erupts out of
09:01 | a volcano cools but the magma below a volcano can
09:05 | cool us well , forming igneous rocks . Remember rocks
09:11 | are chunks of minerals , They are mineral chunks and
09:15 | they are grouped into three different categories . The first
09:21 | category was sedimentary sedimentary rocks are formed when particles called
09:26 | sediments joined together . It is almost like they want
09:30 | to be friends as they form a new rock .
09:33 | The second category was metamorphic metamorphic rocks are formed from
09:38 | heat or pressure . It is almost like when someone
09:41 | gets angry their face actions or words can be changed
09:45 | or morphed . Mm . Finally the third category was
09:50 | Igneous Igneous rocks are formed when molten rock cools off
09:55 | this molten rock can be either magma or lava .
09:58 | Igneous rocks are like when someone was really angry but
10:02 | decides to take deep breaths to start to cool off
10:06 | . Igneous rocks are formed when molten rock chills out
10:10 | . I'm we've talked a little bit about this ,
10:13 | as we've learned about these types of rocks . But
10:15 | rocks change . Scientists call it the rock cycle .
10:19 | Igneous rocks can break apart into sediment and become sedimentary
10:24 | rocks , sedimentary rocks can be pushed into the earth
10:28 | and become metamorphic rock . And metamorphic rocks can turn
10:31 | into liquid rock and cool into igneous rock . That's
10:36 | amazing , isn't it ? That is called the Rock
10:39 | cycle . Mm It's fun to learn about rocks .
10:43 | Next time you find a rock , find out what
10:45 | type it is and think about all that That rock
10:48 | has gone through . Rocks aren't just chunks of minerals
10:52 | . They tell a wonderful story about how the earth
