02:39 | , If you're in the big apple , be sure
02:42 | to enjoy the eats , cronuts , street vendor ,
02:46 | hot dogs and bagels . But a word to the
02:50 | wise , you'll be paying eight more if you want
02:54 | your bagels sliced City laws say that once the bread
02:58 | has been sliced , it's a prepared meal and must
03:02 | be taxed like a restaurant meal . So get your
03:05 | locks and schmear on the side and use a plastic
03:08 | knife to cut your bag all . It'll save you
03:11 | just over a quarter . I guess today's news was
03:19 | very , very difficult . Let me read it a
03:22 | little bit slower . If you are in the Big
03:27 | Apple , be sure to enjoy the eats cronuts street
03:34 | vendor hot dogs and bagels . But a word to
03:40 | the wise , You'll be paying eight more if you
03:45 | want your bagel sliced City Laws say that once the
03:52 | bread has been sliced , it's a prepared meal and
03:58 | must be taxed like a restaurant meal . So get
04:03 | your locks and schmear on the side and use a
04:08 | plastic knife to cut your bag . Als it'll save
04:12 | you just over a quarter . Was that any easier
04:21 | ? Oh , I don't know . This was tough
04:24 | . So the story takes place in which city ?
04:30 | Yes , that's right . Many of you know ,
04:34 | New york City , New york City has the nickname
04:39 | The Big Apple . And the story is talking about
04:44 | what ? That's right . It's talking about bagels ,
04:50 | B A G E L S bagels , bagels are
04:56 | a type of bread . They look like a doughnut
05:00 | , but they're much heavier and sometimes they're sweet .
05:05 | But many times they're not sweet . Lots of people
05:08 | eat them as kind of a sandwich , especially in
05:12 | the morning . And what's the point of this news
05:19 | ? Well , the point of the news is to
05:22 | save you some money . So let's go look at
05:27 | the first sentence again . If you're in the big
05:31 | apple , if you are in new york city ,
05:35 | the big apple . Now , why is new york
05:38 | city called the big Apple ? I never saw any
05:43 | apple trees in new york . Well , it's actually
05:47 | a very old history and it refers to horse racing
05:55 | . So lots of people a long time ago they
06:00 | wanted to race their horses in New york city because
06:07 | the biggest prizes , the biggest money prizes were in
06:13 | new york city . Okay , do you understand ?
06:16 | So what does a horse like to eat a horse
06:21 | likes to eat an apple ? So after a horse
06:26 | runs a horse race , they give it apples .
06:31 | Well , the big apple is the big prize and
06:36 | new york City had the biggest apple , the biggest
06:40 | horse racing prize of all the horse races in America
06:46 | . So a lot of people who were horse racers
06:50 | , their dream was to get to win the Big
06:55 | Apple . And where was the big Apple ? It
06:58 | was in new york city . So horse racers could
07:02 | say this to each other , Hey john where are
07:06 | you going ? Next week ? Next week I'm going
07:09 | to get the Big Apple . You're going to New
07:13 | york city to win the big money prize . Yes
07:19 | . And because of this tradition , new york city
07:22 | became known as the Big Apple . So if you're
07:26 | in the Big Apple , if you're in New york
07:28 | city , be sure to make sure you do something
07:33 | , be sure to enjoy the E . It's E
07:37 | A T s . Now this is a noun ,
07:40 | it's not a verb . The eats means the food
07:45 | , but it refers to specific food in this case
07:50 | in new york city . So what are the famous
07:54 | foods in new york city ? Cronuts street vendor ,
08:00 | hot dogs and bagels . Now , Cronuts , we
08:05 | studied about those in DDM So if you are a
08:09 | DDM member then you know all about cronuts . Cronuts
08:15 | are a combination of a crescent and a doughnut .
08:21 | It's once again a morning meal , I guess we
08:25 | could call it a meal . It's a type of
08:27 | pastry . Crescent is a pastry of french pastry and
08:33 | a donut is a deep fried piece of dough .
08:36 | So a Cronin is a combination croissant and doughnut .
08:41 | That's very traditional new york . It was invented in
08:44 | new york last year and it's very popular all around
08:48 | the world . So that is a big Apple eat
08:53 | . Another thing to eat in new york city would
08:57 | be street vendor hot dogs , you know what a
09:02 | street vendor is , People who sell things on the
09:05 | street and new york city has many street vendor hot
09:10 | dogs , street vendors that sell hot dogs and they
09:13 | really are delicious . And another Big Apple eat would
09:19 | be the bagel , B A G E L plural
09:24 | . Of course bagels , bagels are a type of
09:28 | bread and it's boiled and then baked and it's kind
09:35 | of hard and shiny on the outside and very chewy
09:41 | . Lots of people add cream cheese or jelly .
09:45 | They make sandwiches , bagels are really delicious breads and
09:51 | they come from Poland . But many people think they're
09:55 | a type of jewish bread because lots of jewish people
09:59 | live in new york city and they like , they
10:02 | like bagels . But no it's not a jewish bread
10:06 | . I don't think it's actually a polish bread .
10:09 | So if you're in the Big Apple , be sure
10:12 | to enjoy the eats . Cronuts street vendor , hot
10:16 | dogs and Bangles . But a word to the wise
10:22 | . But here is some important information , a tip
10:27 | to the smart people . So if you want to
10:29 | be a wise person , if you want to be
10:32 | a smart person here is a word , a tip
10:36 | that you need to listen to . You'll be paying
10:40 | eight more if you want your bagel sliced . So
10:47 | if you buy a bag a well and you ask
10:51 | the restaurant or the bakery too cut the bag all
10:55 | to slice the bag all in half , Then you
11:00 | will have to pay eight more . You have to
11:04 | pay eight more to slice a piece of bread .
11:07 | Why ? City laws say that once the bread has
11:13 | been sliced it's a prepared meal and must be taxed
11:19 | like a restaurant meal . So new york , city
11:23 | laws say that if bread is cut then it requires
11:30 | a chef or a professional food service person to cut
11:36 | the bread , which means it's not just an over
11:40 | the counter donut . Now it is a prepared meal
11:45 | , a meal that is prepared for you and therefore
11:51 | it must be taxed like a restaurant meal . So
11:57 | if you buy a bag a well and it's not
12:00 | sliced , you don't have to pay tax . But
12:04 | if it's sliced , you have to pay eight tax
12:09 | . So get your locks and schmear on the side
12:14 | and use a plastic knife to cut your bagel .
12:19 | So when you buy your bagel , don't have them
12:25 | cut it and get your locks and schmear on the
12:31 | side . Now locks actually refers to smoked salmon salmon
12:40 | . S . A L . M . O N | |
12:43 | . It's a fish . And in America , smoked
12:46 | salmon almost always comes from Alaska . It's a very
12:51 | pink actually orange meat . It's very good . That's
12:56 | locks L . O . X locks , smoked salmon
13:00 | and schmear . S C H M E A R
13:06 | schmear . This is cream cheese . So many people
13:12 | when they eat a bagel they use or they put
13:16 | cream cheese on the top and smoked salmon , but
13:21 | in new york city they say locks and schmear in
13:26 | my hometown , we say smoked salmon and cream cheese
13:33 | , locks and schmear are very new york words .
13:36 | So if you go to new york , you'll definitely
13:40 | see locks and schmear if you go to a traditional
13:43 | bangle place , so one more time . So get
13:48 | your locks and schmear on the side , don't get
13:52 | it on the bagel , but get it on the
13:55 | side , get it separately and use a plastic knife
14:01 | to cut your bag all . Usually at the stores
14:05 | , they'll have plastic knives that you can take to
14:09 | spread your cheese and also cut your bangle . If
14:14 | you do that , it'll save you just over a
14:18 | quarter , It will save you 25 cents , a
14:23 | little more than 25 cents in America . A quarter
14:28 | is a coin And it's the 25 cent coin .
14:33 | So in new york city , if you buy a
14:36 | fresh bagel , It's usually about $3 . $3 times
14:42 | eight would be 24 cents . But it's always a
14:47 | little bit more than $3 . So it'll save you
14:50 | just over a quarter . All right . So hopefully
14:55 | the story is a little bit easier to understand .
14:59 | Let's review some of the words and make sure you
15:02 | understand them . The big Apple eats cronuts street vendor
15:12 | hot dogs bagels . A word to the wise sliced
15:21 | prepared meal locks schmear on the side a quarter .
15:32 | Let's listen to the story again . The first time
15:35 | I'll say it nice and smooth . The second time
15:40 | I'll say it like a p news . Are you
15:43 | ready ? If you're in the Big Apple , be
15:49 | sure to enjoy the eats cronuts street vendor , hot
15:54 | dogs and bagels . But a word to the wise
16:00 | , You'll be paying eight more if you want your
16:04 | bagel sliced City laws say that once the bread has
16:11 | been sliced , it's a prepared meal and must be
16:16 | taxed like a restaurant meal . So get your locks
16:21 | and schmear on the side and use a plastic knife
16:26 | to cut your bag all . It'll save you just
16:29 | over a quarter If you're in the big apple ,
16:36 | be sure to enjoy the eats cronuts , street vendor
16:39 | , hot dogs and bagels . But a word to
16:43 | the wise , you'll be paying eight more if you
16:46 | want your bagels sliced City Laws say that once the
16:50 | bread has been sliced , it's a prepared meal and
16:53 | must be taxed like a restaurant meal . So get
16:57 | your locks and schmear on the side and use a
16:59 | plastic knife to cut your bag all . It'll save
17:02 | you just over a quarter . Mhm . Okay ,
17:12 | this is the Q and a section for let's Master
17:15 | english . And we have three questions today . The
17:18 | first question comes from Nick Nathan johnson and he wants
17:23 | to know the difference between active and proactive . Well
17:29 | , nick to be active means to move around a
17:35 | lot , so if you are not active , you
17:40 | will get fat . And another example , it is
17:45 | important to keep your mind active , especially as you
17:51 | get older . So active means movement , moving around
17:57 | to be proactive means to act or to move in
18:03 | anticipation of some future problem or some future opportunity .
18:12 | So for example , saving money in the bank is
18:17 | proactive because you might have an emergency and need the
18:23 | money in the future . Now , nick , I
18:27 | made a big example using both of the words in
18:33 | the same paragraph , and it's about my son .
18:35 | So , Nick , I hope this makes it clear
18:38 | . My son is very active . Sometimes his activity
18:44 | causes him to get hurt when he's active in the
18:49 | kitchen . I must be proactive . I must look
18:54 | for potential dangers and remove them . Uh huh .
18:59 | There's a knife in the sink . I don't want
19:02 | my son playing with that . I'll clean it and
19:06 | put it away before he finds it . So nick
19:10 | . I hope that last example was clear my son
19:14 | is active and I was being proactive in order to
19:19 | protect him so that he didn't get hurt . Okay
19:23 | , our next question is from Cathy E . And
19:27 | she wants to know about the R . Sound the
19:30 | R . Sound after th is it like the spanish
19:36 | are Now when we say the spanish are this is
19:40 | kind of my expression . And I mean the river
19:45 | river Ryba that's my spanish are so that rolling ,
19:50 | that type of , our many countries have this type
19:53 | of an R . Sound . So if there's a
19:56 | . Th and then an R . Is it like
19:59 | the spanish are for example T . H . R
20:03 | . E . Three T . H . R . | |
20:07 | O . W throw T . H . R . | |
20:10 | O . U . G . H . Through T
20:14 | . H . R . I . V . E | |
20:16 | thrive . And my answer Kathy is no no it's
20:21 | not . The R . Does not touch the top
20:27 | of the mouth , the roof of the mouth .
20:30 | Specifically the al viola ridge the tongue doesn't touch .
20:35 | So let's look at the number three . So T
20:40 | . H . R . E . Let's just say
20:43 | R . E . Re . Re re not re
20:48 | re re re not that re re and then let's
20:54 | add the th read 3333 . So when you do
21:03 | the th sound Immediately bring your tongue down . Don't
21:10 | let the tongue go up . Otherwise you'll say three
21:14 | Go Down 3 3 . And the same with throw
21:24 | for example throw the ball . R . O .
21:26 | W . Ro ro ro throw throw throw throw the
21:31 | ball through . T . H . R . O
21:35 | . U . G . H . Rew rew rew
21:38 | kangaroo , kangaroo through through through . And thrive th
21:45 | R . I . V . E thrive thrive thrive
21:50 | thrive . So no there's no rolling . Are we
21:55 | don't say three throw through thrive it's three throw through
22:02 | thrive So Kathy keep practicing . Get that are sound
22:07 | down in America that are sound is very important .
22:12 | And our third question comes from Mohammed Al Ajmi .
22:17 | I hope I pronounced that right Mohammed Mohammed's question is
22:21 | why is the D . In Friends Silent Friends ?
22:26 | F . R . I . E . N . | |
22:28 | D . S . That's a great question Mohammed .
22:31 | And we study this all the time in D .
22:34 | D . M . So let me give you a
22:36 | really short free lesson . We have three strong sounds
22:42 | in american english the S . N . And L
22:46 | . Those sounds are very strong . We can always
22:50 | hear those sounds . And we have three week sounds
22:54 | in american english the to end the th the D
22:59 | . T . Th . Those are very weak many
23:02 | times . We can't hear them especially when a strong
23:07 | sound is next to a week sound . The week
23:11 | sound can be canceled and that's what happens in the
23:15 | word . Friends . We have an N . D
23:18 | . S . The N . And the S .
23:21 | Are strong sounds and the D . Is a week
23:25 | sound so we can cancel the D . And just
23:29 | say friends . Friends Mohamed and I are friends .
23:35 | We're friends . I have two friends . Friends got
23:40 | it . Thanks a lot for your questions and remember
23:43 | use coach Shane's E . S . L . To
23:47 | ask your questions and maybe I'll get it in a
23:50 | podcast or maybe I'll make a video for you .
23:53 | I do have lots of questions to go through so
23:57 | please be patient how you doing everybody . This is
24:07 | country Shane and I'm here to bring you the facts
24:11 | . The english language sometimes lies , french fries are
24:16 | not french , they're Belgian and the french poodle ,
24:20 | it's german and the french horn is germane to french
24:26 | toast . How french toast it was around long before
24:31 | France became a country . So don't believe everything you
24:35 | hear in english because sometimes the english language lies .
24:41 | This has been country Shane bringing you the facts .
25:03 | Okay . It's time for today's let's master english studying
25:08 | tip . Now today's tip is actually two parts and
25:13 | the first part is know why you want to learn
25:19 | english . A lot of people , they start to
25:23 | study something and then after a while they give up
25:29 | , the reason they give up is they don't really
25:32 | have a passion , they don't really have a reason
25:38 | , it's not very necessary right now for them .
25:43 | So they give up and that can be done in
25:46 | sports and studying in relationships . It happens a lot
25:50 | , but don't let it happen to you and your
25:54 | english think about it . Why do you want to
25:58 | study english ? Maybe your goal is to make friends
26:04 | around the world . Maybe an american friend , a
26:06 | Canadian friend , a british friend , maybe a friend
26:09 | in Egypt and you don't speak Arabic and you want
26:13 | to speak english or maybe a friend in India or
26:16 | Russia or Argentina wherever . Maybe you want to study
26:22 | english to travel . Yeah , you can almost go
26:27 | anywhere in the world and speak english . They'll have
26:32 | english guides in every country . They have english travel
26:37 | books in every country , the hotels all around the
26:41 | world , they speak some english . So maybe it's
26:45 | for travel or maybe you love technology , you want
26:50 | to study , you want to study about any subject
26:54 | , whether it's greek , history or the pyramids in
26:59 | Egypt or american , history or whatever technology , all
27:03 | the Apple computer programming , languages and everything else .
27:08 | Technology . So much of it is in english ,
27:12 | you need to know english to really understand technology and
27:18 | the sciences . Maybe that's your reason . Maybe it's
27:21 | so that you can watch movies and listen to songs
27:25 | and not have to worry about the lyrics or the
27:28 | subtitles . Maybe you need to master english for business
27:34 | or because you want to study in America . Well
27:38 | this is your homework . I want you to really
27:41 | think about why you want to master english , what's
27:47 | the ultimate goal ? And once you think about that
27:51 | goal , once you decide on what your goal is
27:56 | , you have to start imagining yourself being successful ,
28:02 | you have to imagine yourself speaking english fluently listening to
28:08 | a movie and a pop song and understanding everything ,
28:11 | laughing at the humor , crying at the sad things
28:16 | . You have to imagine yourself in a business meeting
28:19 | getting a great contract or studying in an american university
28:24 | , understanding what the professor is saying and debating with
28:30 | other students and winning the debate , you have to
28:35 | pick your passion . What is it , what is
28:38 | your goal with english ? I'm gonna help you ,
28:42 | I'm gonna help you with that goal , but first
28:45 | you need to pick it . Okay , so tell
28:48 | me what your goal is . You can leave a
