00:0-1 | Hi , I'm jennifer from english with jennifer . Some
00:04 | students may think that grammar was invented to make your
00:07 | lives miserable . I'd like to convince you that grammar
00:11 | is a tool and once you master it , you
00:13 | can communicate clearly and accurately . So let's take the
00:17 | time to study a bit of grammar . Let's study
00:20 | the passive . I don't know who invented grammar ,
00:31 | do you actually ? It was probably many different people
00:34 | who identified the patterns , wrote the rules and came
00:38 | up with the terminology . Was it someone a few
00:41 | centuries ago ? Was it someone in ancient Rome ?
00:44 | Honestly the details aren't that important . So I chose
00:48 | to say grammar was invented rather than someone invented .
00:52 | Grammar was invented is an example of the passive .
00:57 | We formed the passive with B plus the past participle
01:01 | . That's the form of a regular verb and the
01:04 | third form of an irregular verb like heard seen .
01:10 | Built . We use the passive when we don't know
01:17 | or we don't want to name who the doer of
01:19 | the action is . Grammar wasn't invented to torture .
01:25 | You invented . By whom don't know ? Not important
01:32 | . The do er is also called the agent or
01:35 | the performer in some sentences . There's not just a
01:41 | do er but there's also a receiver . Transitive verbs
01:48 | , verbs that take an object can change from active
01:51 | to passive by shifting the focus from the do er
01:55 | to the receiver . The object of a verb can
01:59 | become the subject of a passive sentence . Why did
02:05 | someone invent grammar ? Why was grammar invented ? Why
02:15 | did someone create grammar rules ? Why were grammar rules
02:22 | created ? I gave examples . Examples were given .
02:37 | So there are two voices in english . The active
02:40 | voice focuses on the doer of the action . The
02:44 | passive voice focuses on the receiver of the action .
02:50 | Transitive verbs give us the choice to use the active
02:54 | or the passive voice . Do I have to master
02:58 | grammar ? What if grammar isn't fully mastered ? The
03:08 | truth is that grammar is the way we all understand
03:12 | and agree how language works . There wasn't a single
03:15 | person who invented grammar , right ? Grammar evolved over
03:20 | time . Language is still evolving . Take the verb
03:27 | evolve . Grammar evolved over time . Language is still
03:31 | evolving in my examples . Does evolve . Have an
03:35 | object . No , So can I form the passive
03:42 | ? No . Only a transitive verb can shift back
03:45 | and forth between active and passive . Look . Which
03:52 | of these sentences can become passive , A C and
04:09 | D . Can all become passive because they have transitive
04:12 | verbs . Sentence be uses teaches as an intransitive verb
04:21 | . Remember some verbs have transitive and intransitive meanings so
04:25 | you need to be careful if I used the passive
04:31 | and I want to name the do er I use
04:34 | a by phrase . That text book was written by
04:38 | jennifer . Sometimes my videos are recommended by other teachers
04:48 | but a lot of the time with the passive ,
04:50 | we don't need a by phrase . For example ,
04:53 | I was invited to speak at a regional conference .
04:57 | By whom not important . Well maybe it's important for
05:01 | me to know and remember , but it's not important
05:04 | for me to share a name with you . The
05:09 | exception to what I just told you about naming the
05:12 | doer with a by phrase is the state of passive
05:16 | . The state of passive doesn't describe an action .
05:19 | It describes a state or a condition . The state
05:22 | of passive is formed the same way , B plus
05:25 | the past participle . But we can use other prepositional
05:29 | phrases after the verb grammar is composed of rules .
05:39 | English is classified as a Germanic language , jennifer is
05:45 | married to a Russian . All these passive verbs describe
05:52 | states , there's no doer of an action because there
05:56 | is no action for more practice with the state of
06:02 | passive . Check out my video on this topic .
06:05 | I'll put the link in the video description right now
06:10 | . We'll turn our attention back to the dynamic passive
06:14 | . These are transitive verbs that can be written in
06:17 | the passive or the active voice first . Let's make
06:23 | sure you can easily form the passive . Change all
06:26 | my sentences to the passive voice . Remember that the
06:30 | form of be changes to show time and to agree
06:34 | with the subject . The main verb is the past
06:37 | participle use a by phrase if you think it's necessary
06:45 | one . The rules are followed by many . Two
07:03 | new lessons are being created by our teachers . Three
07:16 | . Mhm . A new video was published by jennifer
07:21 | . Mhm four . Mhm . Different options were being
07:33 | evaluated by the team . Five . Ufo sightings have
07:48 | been documented by investigators . Six sharks had been seen
08:02 | in the area . Mm seven . Mhm . New
08:14 | apps will be created by educators . Eight . Our
08:30 | actions are going to be judged by future generations .
08:38 | Nine . A vaccine will have been found by then
08:54 | . Let's see how you do with some modal verbs
08:56 | . Okay . 10 . Mhm . Yeah . The
09:05 | video can be paused at any time . 11 .
09:12 | Yeah . Our parents should be respected . 12 grammar
09:33 | must have been studied back then . You may be
09:40 | wondering about other verb forms that we didn't practice like
09:43 | the past , Perfect , progressive . The truth is
09:46 | we don't really use the passive in those other forms
09:54 | . Mm The bigger challenge I think is deciding which
09:57 | voice to use . If both active and passive verb
10:01 | forms are possible . Why is one sometimes better than
10:05 | the other ? Here's our last quiz . Choose the
10:10 | sentence that fits the situation . Active or passive one
10:21 | . Yeah . Yeah . Mhm mm . Yeah .
10:36 | Yeah . Yeah . I'd go with the active voice
10:44 | . This is a job interview . The focus should
10:46 | be on the doer of the action . The job
10:49 | candidate . What can you do ? What value can
10:52 | you add also in conversation . The passive isn't used
10:57 | as frequently . Two . Mhm . I'd go with
11:16 | the passive voice . The focus isn't on the do
11:19 | er It's on the receiver of the action , the
11:22 | invoice , the status of the invoice . I might
11:26 | also be trying to protect the person who failed to
11:29 | submit the invoice on time Three . Mhm . Yeah
11:51 | . Mhm . Yeah this is a trick question .
11:54 | Either one could work but I'm going to go with
11:56 | the passive . Do you know why ? Because artistic
11:59 | works are an exception . We can use the passive
12:03 | to give credit to someone for an artistic work .
12:06 | Directed by . Produced by . Composed by . Written
12:11 | by or actually highlighting the person who should receive credit
12:24 | . Yeah . Four . Mhm . You can use
12:44 | either here active or passive but I'd go with the
12:47 | passive because it shifts the focus to the receiver of
12:51 | the action the victims of the tornado . That's the
12:55 | real tragedy here . And if this is a news
12:58 | article , the headlines would likely be 23 killed in
13:02 | tornado . We see abbreviated grammar in news headlines and
13:06 | you need to be able to recognize what the full
13:08 | structure is . 23 killed means 23 were killed or
13:14 | 23 have been killed . Mhm . Yeah . Five
13:21 | last one . Yeah . Okay . Mhm . Yeah
13:30 | . Mhm . Mhm . Here I'd go with the
13:39 | passive because I think the focus should be on the
13:41 | receiver of the action , the elderly . It's obvious
13:45 | that some kind of authority is advising them to stay
13:49 | at home . Is it really important to name the
13:51 | authority ? No . Yeah . So remember some common
13:57 | reasons why we don't name the duer and why we
14:00 | leave out a by phrase because the doers obvious because
14:04 | we don't know who the do er is , because
14:06 | it's not important . And the exception is when we
14:09 | speak about artistic works and we're giving credit to someone
14:13 | , then we use the by phrase . So when
14:19 | is the active voice preferred ? Well , any time
14:23 | we want to focus on the doer of the action
14:27 | , For example , the active voice is preferred in
14:29 | resume writing . This is when we want dynamic language
14:33 | . I led a team of 10 and consistently met
14:36 | our quarterly goals . The active voice allows me to
14:40 | focus on what I achieved . The passive voice is
14:47 | more common in formal english military metals such as the
14:52 | Air Force Cross are awarded to members of the Armed
14:55 | Forces for their distinguished service and valor . The grammar
15:00 | and the vocabulary make this statement formal . For this
15:06 | reason , the passive voice is also more common and
15:08 | scholarly texts . The Battle of Gettysburg was fought in
15:13 | the summer of 1863 . It was considered a turning
15:16 | point in the American Civil War . Before we end
15:25 | , I'd like to share two common sayings with the
15:27 | passive when something is easy to talk about , but
15:33 | hard to do . We have the expression easier said
15:36 | than done , something can be said , something can
15:39 | be done . Which one is easier ? The full
15:43 | idea is that a goal is easier said aloud than
15:46 | actually done . We're focusing on what we want to
15:49 | achieve . The focus is on the receiver , not
15:52 | the doer , easier said than done and the last
16:01 | one nothing ventured , nothing gained . The full idea
16:06 | is that if nothing is ventured , then nothing is
16:09 | gained . You have to risk something in order to
16:12 | get something . The focus is on what we want
16:15 | to get on , what we want to achieve ,
16:18 | Nothing ventured , nothing gained . Tell me if you
16:24 | agree with that saying nothing ventured , nothing gained .
16:27 | And also tell me an example of something easier said
16:31 | than done . That's all for now . Was the
16:34 | lesson useful ? Please remember to like the video .
16:37 | I hope you're feeling more confident now about the passive
16:40 | and you can use the passive more confidently going forward
16:44 | as always . Thanks for watching and happy studies .
