Science Unscrambled: A Framework for K-12 Science Education - By Lumos Learning
00:05 | I'm Heidi Schwein River . I'm the deputy director for
00:08 | the Board on Science Education at the National Research Council
00:18 | . The framework is a document that offers a vision
00:21 | for K 12 science education that all students should be
00:24 | able to achieve . It outlines the things that students
00:27 | should know and the things they should be able to
00:29 | do in science , starting from kindergarten and going through
00:31 | 12th grade . The framework is important because the previous
00:38 | sets of standards for science education came out in the
00:40 | mid nineties , and since then we've learned an awful
00:43 | lot about how students learn science and better ways for
00:46 | teaching science . We want to employ those to improve
00:48 | science education . In addition , in the 21st century
00:52 | , science really suffuses every aspect of our lives .
00:55 | And it's really important that all students have access to
00:57 | good science education . And finally , states currently are
01:01 | really interested in developing common standards for education , and
01:04 | we're hoping that the framework can be a basis for
01:06 | that effort . In science , the framework lays out
01:12 | a vision but also articulates what students should know and
01:15 | be able to do in science . So there are
01:16 | three dimensions scientific and engineering practices which are the things
01:20 | you do in science , like analyzing data or asking
01:24 | questions . Crosscutting concepts which are the broad themes that
01:27 | go across all the disciplines and science , like causing
01:30 | a factor systems and then the core ideas in the
01:32 | disciplines that's in the physical sciences , life sciences ,
01:36 | earth and space sciences and engineering technology . And those
01:39 | are really things like human impacts on the Earth .
01:43 | The Structure and function of Living things framework was developed
01:49 | by a committee of 18 experts . Half of them
01:52 | were sort of outstanding world class scientists and the other
01:55 | half were experts in learning and teaching science . They
01:58 | worked over a period of a year and a half
02:01 | to develop the document . They also solicited input from
02:04 | many stakeholder groups in education , and the resulting document
02:07 | is the consensus of that group of 18 about what
02:10 | students should know and be able to do in science
02:13 | . The framework builds on elements from previous standards documents
02:19 | , but it also offers some new elements . For
02:22 | example , it identifies a small set of core ideas
02:26 | and practices across K 12 to provide greater coherence to
02:29 | how students learn science across all of the grades .
02:32 | It also better specifies scientific practices . That is what
02:36 | students should do in science beyond a general emphasis on
02:39 | inquiry . And finally , it really stresses that the
02:42 | best way for students to learn science is through doing
02:45 | science . So through engaging in the practice , is
02:47 | so there's no more memorizing lists of discrete facts .
02:51 | Framework is currently being used by states to design a
02:57 | common set of standards for science education . In addition
03:01 | , we also hope that it will be used to
03:03 | guide improvements in different parts of science education , including
03:06 | the curriculum , instruction and assessment . The goal of
03:09 | the framework is that all these aspects of the K
03:12 | 12 science education system will be aligned so that we
03:16 | can achieve the vision that the framework articulates okay . |
DESCRIPTION:
Science, engineering, and technology permeate nearly every facet of modern life and hold the key to solving many of humanity's most pressing current and future challenges. The United States' position in the global economy is declining, in part because U.S. workers lack fundamental knowledge in these fields. To address the critical issues of U.S. competitiveness and to better prepare the workforce, A Framework for K-12 Science Education proposes a new approach to K-12 science education that will capture students' interest and provide them with the necessary foundational knowledge in the field.
