00:00 | Welcome to Kids Academy . Uh huh . Hi ,
00:37 | everyone . It looks like our friends Kite needs more
00:40 | wind energy to keep it flying . What is energy
00:44 | ? Energy is the ability to do work or to
00:48 | make something happen . So let's talk about some types
00:51 | of energy , light energy , heat , energy ,
00:54 | electrical energy , water , energy and wind energy .
01:03 | That's a lot of different types of energy . There's
01:05 | one particular type of energy I want to talk about
01:07 | today , and that's an invisible energy . It's an
01:10 | energy you can't see , but it's all around us
01:14 | all the time . You might even feel it .
01:15 | Right now it's called wind Energy . Wind energy can
01:19 | do all kinds of things like blow this flag or
01:24 | help these kids keep their kite in the air .
01:28 | Yeah , it can also help push this toy boat
01:31 | across the pond and something you might have used .
01:34 | It harnesses wind energy is one of these . This
01:38 | is a pinwheel . If we wanted to move ,
01:40 | we have to use energy . I can use an
01:42 | invisible type of energy , and we all know what
01:45 | I'm gonna do here . Yeah , blow into it
01:51 | . That's wind energy . And even though you can't
01:54 | see it , it's coming out of my mouth and
01:56 | hitting the blades of our pinwheel and spinning it Bali
01:59 | . Why don't you give it a shot ? Yeah
02:03 | . Wow . Great job . That's all energy .
02:10 | This type is wind energy . Let's do some experiments
02:14 | with some wind energy now explained earlier how you can't
02:17 | see wind energy , you can only see what it
02:19 | does . So what we've set up here is a
02:21 | little experiment that you can try at home . It's
02:24 | basically a wind tunnel . So I have a wind
02:27 | machine right here . A simple house fan , and
02:30 | then I have a couple of different objects of different
02:32 | weights and densities . So we have a hammer .
02:36 | Pretty heavy . A dollar bill . Who doesn't like
02:39 | a dog go a regular pen , an empty water
02:43 | bottle and an Easter egg for the holidays . So
02:46 | I'm going to place all of these about the same
02:48 | distance from my wind machine . What I'm gonna do
02:51 | is I'm gonna plug my wind machine into the wall
02:57 | . Now the wind machine is gonna pull electrical energy
03:00 | from the wall down this cable into the machine and
03:04 | turn the electrical energy by spinning into wind energy .
03:09 | Now that wind energy , by definition , should be
03:12 | able to do work or move things . We should
03:14 | be able to move some of these objects farther away
03:17 | from the fan . So let's see if it works
03:19 | . Now we're stationed just behind the wind machine and
03:22 | I'm gonna fire it up and see if we can
03:24 | turn some of that electrical energy into wind energy and
03:27 | have it do some work for us . Mhm .
03:30 | Which object do you think will move first ? The
03:34 | egg , the empty water bottle , the pen ,
03:38 | the dollar or the hammer . Let's fire it up
03:44 | . Yeah . Mhm . There goes our dollar .
03:52 | Now . Our water bottle is definitely moving . We
03:54 | can see the energy being transferred into that bottle .
03:57 | Depends moving a little bit . And the egg seems
04:00 | to be wobbling . I'm gonna turn up the energy
04:02 | a little bit , See if we can't move some
04:04 | of this stuff . There goes the eggs starting to
04:14 | move away . Bottle Looks like it's about to go
04:18 | . Now we've got one more level . Let's see
04:19 | if we can really get it going . There goes
04:26 | the bottle . Dollar bill . Looks like it might
04:29 | be stuck under the hammer . There . Hope there
04:34 | goes the dollar . What we saw in this experiment
04:38 | was that the force from our fan or the amount
04:41 | of energy was able to move Some of the lighter
04:43 | objects , like the water bottle and the egg and
04:45 | the dollar bill really flew away . But other heavier
04:48 | objects like our hammer barely moved at all . Let's
04:52 | see if we can put some of that wind energy
04:54 | to work for us . Okay , So what we've
04:57 | designed here is a wind catcher , a wind turbine
05:05 | connected to our rod , which is just loosely held
05:08 | on by some string . And then down here ,
05:12 | we've tied some string onto it . And I use
05:14 | these to eggs to try and keep the string in
05:15 | place . And you'll see why I need those in
05:17 | a minute and attached to that string . Yeah ,
05:21 | is another egg . Let's see if we can take
05:23 | that wind energy and make it do some work for
05:26 | us and pick up that egg . Here we go
05:31 | . Look at our spoons are rotating , spinning our
05:34 | shaft and it lifted the egg off the floor for
05:39 | us . Now you might be wondering , How can
05:41 | wind energy like this Help me around the house engineers
05:45 | work together with scientists to build large wind turbines like
05:49 | this one . It looks very similar to the pinwheel
05:52 | that we used earlier today . Both catch that invisible
05:55 | energy called wind . As the wind blows , it
05:59 | creates force that force or wind energy is able to
06:03 | turn the blades of our turbine . And as the
06:06 | turbine spins , the generator inside creates electricity . That
06:11 | electricity travels down wires across the power lines and into
06:16 | your home to light up your house . When you
06:19 | go to charge something , you might actually be plugging
06:22 | into electricity generated by the wind . Whoa , that's
06:25 | a lot of science . Let's go burn off some
06:27 | of our own energy . We way too . Subscribe
