00:0-1 | fourth grade is a really fun time of growth ,
00:07 | discovery and a time of independence for the kids .
00:10 | My name is Alicia Trudell . I am 1/4 grade
00:13 | language arts teacher at Hilltop Elementary School . What does
00:17 | Rufus really want ? And that's going to take us
00:20 | past what's happening on the pages of the book and
00:23 | help us think beyond the book by fourth grade .
00:26 | They're starting to make informed choices where they know that
00:29 | I like science fiction or I don't like historical fiction
00:32 | , and now they have a basis of which to
00:34 | make their choice from or before . It was kind
00:36 | of like Let me just grab a book off the
00:38 | shelf . How do we get to know our characters
00:40 | ? I think what they love is that they start
00:44 | to see a transformation throughout the year . They're expected
00:48 | to read 25 books , and I think they come
00:50 | in and they're like 25 books . I can't do
00:54 | that . And throughout the year , I think the
00:56 | biggest thing they find that is really cool as they
00:59 | surpass that and often read 50 60 75 books because
01:04 | they start to experience many different genres that they haven't
01:06 | seen before writing has changed a lot We're not writing
01:13 | to . Everyone has the same prompt on the board
01:16 | , and we respond to a prompt . We might
01:18 | read three or four different articles , and they're asked
01:21 | to synthesize the main ideas of those articles into a
01:24 | research paper . You need to decide what you want
01:27 | , Jacob to give you feedback on your information ,
01:29 | your narrative or your persuasive . Or they'll read three
01:33 | or four stories and asked to connect the themes of
01:36 | all three stories where in the past that seems like
01:40 | there'd be a skill for maybe seventh or eighth grade
01:42 | , and these fourth graders rise to the challenge and
01:44 | are able to do it . Why do you guys
01:46 | think Kate might have friends now ? She was so
01:49 | lonely at the beginning , and now we've seen a
01:51 | change . Shelley . The other area that has really
01:53 | changed in terms of both for myself and as a
01:56 | parent , is our spelling . We don't use the
01:58 | spelling workbook . We assess all students with the developmental
02:01 | spelling assessment that lets us know their strengths and weaknesses
02:05 | in terms of their word knowledge . And then we
02:08 | put them into like we have guided reading groups We
02:10 | also have guided spelling groups . We give a suggested
02:16 | reading list . After we do our beginning of their
02:18 | reading assessment , we send them list of books for
02:21 | Children within their range . We teach them how to
02:23 | use Scholastic Book Wizard that they can type in a
02:27 | book and find everything at their child's level . They
02:29 | love all of the tales of 1/4 grade . Nothing
02:32 | . Super Fudge , The Judy Blume series . They
02:35 | love the Hank Zips or books , which parents will
02:38 | find interesting . They were written by the Fonds from
02:40 | Happy Days . Yeah , they are writing their paper
02:46 | , but then they might turn it into a comic
02:48 | . Or they might turn it into a graphic novel
02:51 | on the computer and do a PAL tune . Or
02:53 | they might do a comic life . And they just
02:55 | have many different options and avenues to express their understanding
02:59 | . It takes their learning to a different level .
03:01 | It increases their level of engagement , and it makes
03:03 | them take more ownership . Some things that might surprise
03:06 | parents is that level of complexity what they're able to
03:10 | do when parents step back and release control and let
03:14 | them actually do give them more independence . And I
03:19 | think that's hard because they still are seen as little
03:22 | kids . But when they're given the opportunity to rise
03:26 | to the challenge and apply what they're learning in school
03:29 | , they can do it . Read , read ,
03:31 | read . They think our kids are too old to
03:34 | be read aloud to , and we encourage a lot
03:36 | of reading out loud with them . The one way
03:37 | we find to get better at reading is to read
03:40 | and the same with writing . They should find some
03:42 | time to journal . Discuss current events with the Children
03:45 | . Ask them opinions . Ask them . Why do
03:48 | you think this and get them talking about what's happening
03:51 | in the world ? Reading is alive and it's a
03:53 | part of their lives . Let them see the importance
03:55 | of reading , then they're able to do amazing things
03:59 | with it . |
