00:01 language notes topic to U . S . System of
00:05 education . Education is a common topic of conversation .
00:16 If you're going to talk with Americans about going to
00:20 school or being a student , it will certainly help
00:24 to have an understanding of the U . S .
00:27 System of education . I'd like to give you an
00:30 overview of the system . Then you'll have an idea
00:35 about the kind of educational experience one can have in
00:39 the US by the end . You might also then
00:43 find it easier to talk about the educational system in
00:48 your own country . Here in the U . S
00:52 . Ones , school experience might begin as a baby
00:56 at a place called Daycare . Yeah , Daycare is
01:05 a popular choice among working parents , so Children stay
01:09 at daycare . The parents go to work in the
01:13 U . S . A good day care not only
01:16 takes care of very young Children , but also begins
01:21 to provide what we call an early childhood education .
01:26 Once a child is three or four , he or
01:29 she can go to preschool . Preschool in the U
01:38 . S . Is not mandatory . It's not required
01:44 . Preschool programs might be five days a week or
01:47 just a few days a week . Once a child
01:51 turns five . The child can attend kindergarten . Yeah
01:57 , yeah , yeah . These are names of the
02:06 programs . A child in preschool is called a preschooler
02:12 . A child in kindergarten is called a kindergartner .
02:16 Kindergarten is also not mandatory . The law varies from
02:22 state to state . So in some states , kindergarten
02:25 is mandatory and other states it's not . I do
02:30 believe , though , that school districts must offer a
02:34 kindergarten program so that there is that choice . Some
02:38 kindergarten programs are half day programs morning or afternoon .
02:45 Some kindergarten programs are full day programs . After kindergarten
02:51 , a child goes to first grade in the U
02:55 . S . We have 12 grades from school district
03:00 to School district . The organization of these grades is
03:05 different . They group them together in different ways .
03:09 In general , it all begins with elementary school .
03:17 Yeah , Yeah . Sometimes call primary school . You
03:26 might also hear grade school . Elementary school is for
03:31 the lower grades . You might find grades kindergarten through
03:35 third or kindergarten through fifth at an elementary school for
03:41 the middle grades . Children go to middle school .
03:46 Yeah . Yeah . So a middle school might have
03:53 four through eight or fifth through eighth grades again .
03:58 It varies from school district to School district . After
04:03 a middle school comes high school again , you might
04:15 find some differences . But in general , in the
04:19 US , we think of high school as a four
04:22 year program that's ninth , 10th , 11th and 12th
04:27 grades . We can say ninth , 10th , 11th
04:31 and 12 . But we also have special ways to
04:35 refer to those last four years . We can say
04:39 freshman year , sophomore year , junior year and senior
04:45 year . So if someone is a sophomore in high
04:49 school , they have two more years to go .
04:52 A sophomore is in 10th grade . When one finishes
04:59 high school , we say he or she graduates from
05:03 high school . When you graduate from high school ,
05:06 you receive a high school diploma in the US it
05:11 is not mandatory to graduate from high school . The
05:15 law varies from state to state , but in general
05:19 a child must attend school until about the age of
05:22 16 . That's 10th grade . After high school .
05:27 Many choose to go to college . Yeah , that's
05:34 because many professions require a higher education . Higher education
05:40 refers to anything after high school . High school provides
05:45 secondary education , college , higher education . When we
05:52 say a person is in college that means the person
05:56 attends either a college or a university in the U
06:08 . S . Colleges and universities both have four year
06:12 programs . When someone finishes this undergraduate program , this
06:18 person can receive their first degree . It's a bachelor's
06:23 degree . It could be a bachelor of arts or
06:26 a bachelor of science . B A B s in
06:31 college . We have four years . We can talk
06:34 about those four years the same way we talk about
06:38 those last four years in secondary school . High school
06:44 , freshman year , sophomore year , junior year senior
06:49 here . So we have to be specific . When
06:52 we say someone is a senior , Do you mean
06:55 a senior in high school or a senior in college
06:59 ? A freshman in college has three more years before
07:03 graduation . I should note that outside the U .
07:09 S , there is sometimes an understanding that going to
07:13 a university is somehow more prestigious than going to a
07:17 college . In fact , in the U . S
07:20 . We have prestigious universities and prestigious colleges . They
07:25 both offer undergraduate programs , four year programs . When
07:31 a person finishes college , he or she can study
07:35 further and attend graduate school . A person in graduate
07:43 school is a graduate student in contrast , a person
07:47 in college is an undergraduate student in graduate school .
07:54 One can pursue a master's degree that's a master of
07:58 arts or a master of science , Emma or M
08:02 s . If one goes to a business school and
08:06 studies business , the person can receive an M .
08:09 B A . That's master of business administration . If
08:14 one chooses to study even further , the person can
08:18 receive the highest degree possible . That's a PhD PhD
08:27 stands for Doctor of Philosophy . When a person holds
08:31 a PhD , we can address this person as a
08:35 doctor . I know I presented a lot of information
08:41 in a short amount of time , but hopefully you
08:44 have that overview of the system of education here in
08:48 the US Maybe now you'll also feel confident when you
08:53 talk about the educational system in your country . Thanks
