Math Activities To Have Students Do Over The Summer - By Lumos Learning
00:03 | Well , we are getting to the time of year
00:05 | when everybody starts asking me what are some summer math
00:10 | activities that I can give my students to do over
00:14 | ? Break ? Well , I'm Christina to novel the
00:16 | recovering traditionalist , and I hope you'll stick around as
00:19 | I give you , maybe my unpopular opinion about what
00:24 | math activities to have students do over the summer in
00:28 | our quest to build our math minds so we can
00:32 | build the math minds of our students . Now I
00:35 | totally get this request because there is such a thing
00:38 | as the summer slide , where kids understandings will slide
00:43 | back down during the summer when they're not engaging their
00:47 | brains in math and reading and science and social studies
00:51 | . And I gotta tell you , I , my
00:55 | thought is , Let's have him do nothing . I
00:59 | know all of the research about that , but I
01:01 | also know they are kids now . This might be
01:06 | totally different if you're a high school teacher or whatever
01:09 | . I'm talking about our elementary kiddos . They have
01:12 | so much time during the school year that they are
01:15 | doing school , and I got to tell you ,
01:19 | just like us teachers , our students need a break
01:23 | as well . So my short answer is , give
01:27 | them nothing . Now , if you can't do that
01:31 | because you're required to give something that parents are expecting
01:34 | something , whatever that might be , I'm going to
01:37 | give you my two recommendations . And this is coming
01:40 | from an educator from that lens , but also as
01:44 | a lens of a parent of four kids who does
01:48 | not want to spend the time that they have with
01:51 | their kids during the summer , helping them fill out
01:54 | those 30 page packets of worksheets . Right ? These
01:59 | two things are things that I would love because it's
02:02 | things that I feel like I could do as a
02:05 | parent and because it helps bring me closer to my
02:08 | kids . Typically , those packets or worksheets just split
02:12 | us apart because it's like beaten our heads against each
02:15 | other . When we're trying to help our kids with
02:17 | that homework and doing the packets , I want things
02:21 | that are fun to do with my kids , because
02:23 | I do . I want them to have fun over
02:25 | the summer , all right . My first recommendation is
02:29 | to tell them to play games . Now . I'm
02:33 | not going to give you a list of games because
02:35 | you know it just depends upon what your parents have
02:39 | access to . Like if you come from a higher
02:43 | SCS kind of school , you can maybe guess that
02:45 | parents have access to decks of cards and dominoes ,
02:49 | and maybe they have dice to be able to play
02:51 | yacht , See all of those kinds of things .
02:53 | But if you come from lower SCS , you may
02:56 | not be able to assume that parents have access to
02:59 | these things . So you need to decide activities and
03:03 | games that they could play that don't require parents to
03:07 | go out and buy stuff . OK , so keep
03:10 | that in mind . The other thing I want you
03:11 | to think about when you're trying to give them ideas
03:15 | for games is try to make it something that would
03:18 | span the grade levels like Don't send home activities that
03:23 | are just for your grade level . And I just
03:25 | said activities , but I really meant games so don't
03:27 | like create these games that are just for fifth grade
03:30 | , because there's a lot of parents who have multiple
03:33 | age levels of kids , and we can't sit down
03:36 | and just play the game with the fifth grader and
03:38 | then play the game with the kindergartner and then play
03:40 | the game with the third grader , right ? We
03:42 | want a game that we can all play together because
03:45 | it not only the biggest part for me is that
03:48 | it brings my family together . I don't mind doing
03:52 | educational things when it also incorporates family time . I
03:56 | feel like that . My kids are at school so
03:59 | many hours that when they're home with me , I
04:01 | want to do family stuff with them or just let
04:03 | them do things that they want to go do as
04:06 | a child and a kid who wants to go explore
04:08 | and play outside all of those fun things . So
04:11 | when I'm doing school work , I wanted to also
04:15 | be doing things that my family enjoys doing . So
04:19 | keep those things in mind . My second recommendation is
04:22 | to put together something that would encourage parents to look
04:26 | at mathematics in their daily lives like encourage the parents
04:30 | to take their kids grocery shopping when they are out
04:34 | on a road trip this summer . Encourage them to
04:36 | be looking for mathematical things , Even if it's as
04:39 | simple as how many cows do you think are out
04:42 | in that field ? I think they might not be
04:43 | able to count every single one of them , but
04:45 | they're making estimates . You know all of those things
04:48 | where we can see mathematics in our daily lives .
04:50 | I know that I see those and I pull out
04:53 | those questions with my own Children . But a lot
04:56 | of parents don't realize to do those things . So
04:59 | encourage the parents to find mathematics in their daily lives
05:04 | so that when kids come back to school , they
05:08 | see how mathematics relates to their lives , and they
05:11 | are more eager to want to learn it . All
05:14 | right . I hope that this video has helped you
05:17 | build your math mind so you can go build the
05:20 | math minds of your students . Have a great day
00:0-1 | . |
DESCRIPTION:
We are getting to the time of year when everyone is asking âWhat summer math activities should I send home with my students?â Watch this short video to keep yourself active with cool & fun math activities
OVERVIEW:
Math Activities To Have Students Do Over The Summer is a free educational video by Lumos Learning. It helps students in grades 8 practice the following standards 8.SP.1,8.SP.2,8.SP.3.
This page not only allows students and teachers view Math Activities To Have Students Do Over The Summer but also find engaging Sample Questions, Apps, Pins, Worksheets, Books related to the following topics.
1. 8.SP.1 : Construct and interpret scatter plots for bivariate measurement data to investigate patterns of association between two quantities. Describe patterns such as clustering, outliers, positive or negative association, linear association, and nonlinear association..
2. 8.SP.2 : Know that straight lines are widely used to model relationships between two quantitative variables. For scatter plots that suggest a linear association, informally fit a straight line, and informally assess the model fit by judging the closeness of the data points to the line..
3. 8.SP.3 : Use the equation of a linear model to solve problems in the context of bivariate measurement data, interpreting the slope and intercept. For example, in a linear model for a biology experiment, interpret a slope of 1.5 cm/hr as meaning that an additional hour of sunlight each day is associated with an additional 1.5 cm in mature plant height..
