ACT ASPIRE SAMPLE QUESTIONS: GRADE 2 English Language Arts

The ACT Aspire is a Computer-Based Longitudinal Assessment System for College and Career Readiness. The students will face a variety of new technology-enhanced questions as a part of the computer-based tests.

Some of them are Multiple choice-single correct responses, Multiple choice-multiple correct responses, Matching Tables, Drag and Drop, Hot text, Table Fill in, Graphing, Equation/numeric, Extended constructed response, Short answer, and many more.

Today, we will share several sample questions along with practice test links for Grade 2 English Language Arts that gives you an idea of questions that your students are likely to see on the test. After each sample question, an explanation follows that includes any important aspects of the task that you may need to consider with respect to the skills, processes, and information your students need to know.

Domain: Grade 2 >> Reading: Literature

Sample Question: How can you tell that everyone had a good time? Find words from the story that show they were having a good time. List at least 5.

  1. happy
  2. smiling
  3. nice
  4. having fun
  5. laughed

Answer Explanation: Other correct words: fun, funny, smiled, wonderful time.

Students choose words from the story to show that it was a good time. Those listed are found in the story. Students’ need to use 5 of those listed.

Sample Question: Tell what a citizen is.

A citizen is________________________________________.

Answer Explanation: Answers will vary. The correct answer should say that it is a person who lives in a community. It can give more details such as anyone living in a certain place, a person living in an area, somebody who lives somewhere, etc.

Sample Question: Your partner in the class project wants to draw pictures to help you with your presentation on bananas. Which of the following sources would best help your partner and you?

  1. Pictures of healthy snacks from the cafeteria
  2. Pictures of jungles and forests with animals
  3. Pictures of bananas growing, being harvested, and being eaten
  4. Pictures of you and your partner eating bananas

Answer Explanation: The BEST answer would be the third sentence. Pictures of bananas growing, being harvested, and being eaten. The first, second and fourth sentences would not be the BEST answers to help in a presentation about bananas.

Sample Question: Verbs tell the action in a sentence. They are a part of the predicate. Some verbs can be changed from what is happening now (present tense) to what happened before (past tense). Most verbs are changed from present to past by adding an “ed”. But some do not follow that rule. An irregular past tense verb is one where either the verb is changed to a new word or stays the same in present and past tense.

What do verbs do in a sentence? Mark the 2 best answers.

  1. Verbs name the noun in the sentence.
  2. Verbs tell the action in a sentence.
  3. Verbs are words in a sentence that tell about the subject.
