Carmichael rose to prominence as a member and later the chairman of SNCC, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, working with Martin Luther King Jr. and other Southern leaders to stage protests. Although at first he worked alongside major leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. to promote the cause of racial equality with nonviolent protests, he later made a radical change. Frustrated by the lack of progress, he became a militant protester, popularizing the phrase “Black Power” to represent this new view of activism.
