This year in Boy Scouts I had gotten my badge in animal tracks. For weeks and weeks, I had studied pictures of different animal tracks learning which tracks were made by which animals.
"It's important that you learn to identify tracks of dangerous animals, Scouts, "said my Scout Master. "Knowing the difference between a bear track and a dog track could save your life when you are camping."
When I saw the big tracks with long nail marks, I knew immediately that they were made by the black bear.
"Mom! Dad!, " I shouted. "We need to set up camp somewhere else! There are bears near here!"
"What? " Dad said. "The map shows this is a bear-free area."
"Look over here, " I said. "These are black bear tracks. I remember these from Boy Scouts."
"Oh, my goodness, " my mom said, looking at the tracks. "He's right! Rick, you may have just saved our lives."
I smiled feeling good that I could help my family.
