My grandma, mom and sister always do the cooking in the kitchen at our house. It is very good indeed, do not get me wrong. Sometimes, however, I would like to cook on the stove, too! Dad says that guys do the grilling on the bbq
pit outside. Why can’t we cook inside, too?
So one day I asked Dad, “Dad, what would you like for supper tonight?” He replied, “Gee, Howard, I would really love hamburger
steak with onions, but your mom doesn’t want to cook that.”
I announced, “Please, let me try to cook it!” Mom and Dad looked at each other and nodded yes.
I was so elated! First thing I did was ask Mom if she had everything we needed. She said she had no idea what we needed. So I looked on our
computer under recipes and found
several. I began to read off the ingredients. Some she had already and some she said we do not use. I decided to
combine a
couple of recipes and make my own. Here it is!
Ingredients for the hamburger
steak patties:
1 to 1 ½ lbs of hamburger meat-
preferably the ground chuck
3-4 tablespoons of cooking oil, we use canola
1 large egg
2/3 cups of really fine chopped onions
1 teaspoon of Worchester sauce- spicy sauce if you would rather
A pinch of salt
A pinch of garlic powder
A pinch of black pepper
About 1/3-1/2 cup of all-purpose flour- use that to coat the patties to brown
Now the gravy
Instead of making homemade gravy, Dad and I decided I could use the package of onion gravy mix- I used 2 pkgs!
A half of an onion sliced real
thin, long slices!
A little more Worchester sauce for flavor- a splash or two
Directions:
Take the ingredients for the hamburger
steak patties and mix them together- do not add the flour. Form large patties, it will
probably make at least 5-6. Flatten as much as you can, but not too
thin. Now pat the flour on each side of the patties. In a very large frying
pan or
skillet,
heat your cooking oil until it starts to bubble just a bit. Now place the patties in the oil and cook on each side for about 4-5 minutes until brown. Remove them from the frying
pan. Lay
aside, but keep warm. (Warning, do not try to flatten your patties, as it will
cause them to fall apart. One of
mine did fall apart.)
While the
pan is still hot and on, add the thinly sliced onions. Let them cook until they start to turn a little brown. Now, lower the
flame and add the gravy mix
according to the package. Turn the
flame back up and let it come to a low
boil. Be sure to use a spoon or
ladle and
stir the gravy while it is cooking.
Let the gravy mix cook on low for about 5 minutes. Add more water a little at a time if it thickens too fast. Now take the patties and add them to the gravy mix. Cover with a lid and cook for no more than 20 minutes on low.
Enjoy! We did! Yes, now my grandma, mom and sister let me cook inside any time I want to try a new
recipe! Who says guys only cook on the
grill?
